Lori Winther 5003 Berteau

When we first moved in I was told by the owner of 5003 W Berteau that his was the original farmhouse for the area. That may be why the architecture is a little different.

We were told by our first next door neighbor (before the Brobsons) that our house and theirs were designed by “the architect” for his two daughters. The houses are mirrors of each other and we share a garage structure and driveway.

We found out that our house was featured on HGTV in the early 2000s from the relator when we were seeing the house. I think this was the submittal video:

I'm sure someone on our block has more info than I do!

I know there are other tidbits about our house that are interesting and I will gladly share them as I remember:)

Loretta Priola 5049 Berteau

The garage of 5049 W. Berteau is the original garage from when the house was built in 1909 and had a hay loft, which is why there are doors on the second floor of the garage facing the alley. Around 1970, a painter named David Garrison rented the loft for 5-6 years as a painting studio. He was a Mormon and eventually moved to Utah. He painted a picture from the loft with a view of the alley facing east, which he gave to the Priola's and it hung in the living room of their house. The Priola's subsequently gave the painting to the Ejmont's, who live in the house in the painting.

When we moved in and started rehabbing the house and while dealing with knob and tube wiring from who knows when but it had to be from when the house was builtin 1907 and when in the now finished attic I discovered a letter from 1931 to whoever was the inhabitant and it was addressed "Dear Bunch." Most people that know us know that our nicknames for each other is Bunch which was from a kids Saturday morning cartoon from like the late 80's or early 90's. Don't recall which.

The previous owners told us and neighbors that we were the first house with electricity on the block. I guess this house partially burned down in 1912 and rebuilt with electricity.

Ruta 5035 Berteau

The house was gutted to the brick afterAlfredo Estrada bought the house in 2011 from the Sveyda's. He started rehab without a permit and then was busted for not having a permit. The interior was completely redone using some form of template bungalow rehab design that was popular at that time.
